Brief Job Description

The position provides direction, leadership and daily management for SUNY Buffalo State facility maintenance and operations with a staff of approximately 53 trades personnel. The Maintenance Manager plans and organizes the day to day operations of the trades personnel to ensure effective and efficient use of staff, materials and equipment. The position will lead and develop trades personnel (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, paint, masonry, welding, roofing and residential) through the use of effective coaching, performance measurement and mentoring. The Maintenance Manager coordinates externally contracted maintenance and repair needs. Functional responsibilities include the maintenance management of campus buildings and equipment, emergency maintenance repair and response.

The successful applicant for this position will be deemed as essential personnel for emergency response needs.

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated skill in planning, scheduling, organizing and monitoring building repair work activity. • Working knowledge of commercial electrical, mechanical and HVAC systems. • Experience complying with OSHA, asbestos and health and safety standards. • Skill in problem solving, leading initiatives, and managing work flow. • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, train, supervise, and evaluate subordinate staff. • Valid NYS driver’s license. • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office (Word and Outlook). • AAS degree in engineering; construction technology, engineering or closely related discipline; or progressive experience in performing and managing skilled building trades work.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering; construction technology, engineering or closely related discipline. • Comprehensive experience coordinating skilled building trades personnel. • Experience troubleshooting and repair of commercial mechanical, electrical and HVAC systems. • Experience with supervision, management of unionized employees. • Prior experience in the development and oversight of higher education, or similar type physical plant facility operations. • Comprehensive experience in building renovation. • Demonstrated ability to use computerized maintenance management programs.
