Position Summary:

The Unified Communication Systems Technician provides support for University administrators, faculty, staff and students by installing and maintaining complex, current-technology, integrated voice and data communications facilities and equipment. You will install, configure, document and trouble-shoot voice and data communications systems and facilities to meet the University’s needs in accordance with current University standards. You will also work with Communication Systems Engineers and technicians to develop designs and standards in support of new technologies.

Responsibilities include:

• Oversight of cable plant installation and maintenance as well as communications equipment configuration, deployment and maintenance, supporting wide area and local area networks, telephone and data equipment systems. • Supervise and train electricians and student assistants to install and maintain communication systems and networks. • Supervision may include the selection of personnel involving interviewing, hiring, evaluating, promoting and terminating individuals. It also includes planning, assigning, supervising and reviewing the work done by these individuals. • Assist in the development of cabling and equipment standards, installation, testing and documenting procedures. • Responsible for the procurement of cabling materials and tools necessary to perform installations and repairs.

All duties listed above occur in a 24/7 environment, therefore, as part of your professional obligation, working extended hours, holidays and varied hours may be required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree

Two years of experience in installations and troubleshooting with an emphasis on integrated voice and data communications and networking and/or telephone transmission and switching systems.

An ability to understand circuit diagrams and the functionality of electronic components, and ability to master software systems used for provisioning and documenting voice and data services.

This position requires travel, must be able to demonstrate capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.

Must be able to climb ladders, use standard telecommunications tools and equipment, differentiate colors used for standard wire coding and possess good verbal and written communication skills. Considerable physical activity may require handling objects that can weigh up to 50lbs.

The position requires effectiveness in working with people having a broad range of skill levels and disciplinary backgrounds.

Must have good organizational skills and possess the ability to collaborate with other members of the organization in order to meet evolving technical advancements in the university environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Specialized training from a technical school, military and/or vendor in telecommunications or closely related field, including digital and analog electronics, data and/or voice networking, or other communications equipment

Experience with installing and maintaining integrated communications networks, voice and data services, and inside cable plants
