Job Description

Performs various tasks supporting perioperative services including, but not limited to: preparation of operating room, transport of patients, supplies, equipment and specimens; instrument tray setup; assistance to healthcare team prior to and during surgery; turnover and environmental duties.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Participates in the preparation of OR prior to surgery.

  • Acquires, delivers and stocks supplies, laundry, and equipment timely and efficiently. Uses supplies judiciously and in cost-effective manner.- Stocks scrub sinks with required masks and scrubs brushes- Maintains adequate inventory of various tanks in OR and storage areas.- Prepares and ensures availability of functioning stretchers and beds outside each OR.

  • Sets up specialty equipment according to upcoming procedural needs.- Ensures equipment is clean and functioning prior to use.- Communicates with RN regarding missing or malfunctioning equipment and initiates appropriate procedures for repair of equipment.

  • Transports patients, supplies, equipment and specimens, as directed.

  • Operates transport equipment using safe techniques.

  • Confirms patient’s identity according to hospital policy.

  • Transports and monitors patient’s condition and reports any changes to RN.

  • Announces patient’s arrival to RN and reports events during transport.

  • Assists team with safe transfer of patients to/from patient units and within all areas of surgical services.

  • Maintains cleanliness and proper functioning of transport equipment and reports mal-functioning equipment according to policy.

  • Receives, identifies and stages instrument trays based on procedure cards.

  • Receives processed sterile items and stores in appropriate locations.

  • Ensures adequate, timely preparation of cases by using procedure cards.

  • Assists healthcare team prior to and during surgery. Monitors each case to ensure adherence to infection control and sterilization standards.

  • Assists in positioning patient using basic understanding of surgical intervention and anatomy.

  • Assists scrub person by returning instruments to correct tray, as needed.

  • Verifies operative site.

  • Performs skin prep per policy after RN’s assessment of skin integrity. Holds extremity in proper anatomical position during prep.

  • Places pulsatile stockings on patient following skin assessment by RN and according to department policy.

  • Uses appropriate aseptic techniques and surgical terminology.

  • Inspects sterile-package integrity and recognizes signs of package contamination or expiration. Maintains sterility of item while opening onto sterile field.

  • Maintains “surgical conscience” and initiates corrective action when breaks in technique occur; communicates the same.

  • Maintains functioning of instrumentation through lubrication and cleaning.

  • Cleans OR and all related perioperative areas in accordance with established procedures.

  • Disposes of soiled materials and fluids including suction canisters.

  • Collects garbage, cleans and re-lines trash receptacles. Transports garbage to designated area and disposes of non-infectious and infectious waste appropriately.

  • Cleans surfaces, floors, lights and equipment including anesthesia machines, carts and cables.

  • Handles specialty instruments following appropriate technique. Pre-treats soiled instruments with enzymatic spray solution prior to transport.

  • Strips and makes beds, OR tables, and stretchers.

  • Cleans corridors and ancillary rooms, empties trash and linen, and scrubs sinks.

  • Damp dusts horizontal surfaces, OR equipment, overhead lights prior to first case of the day.

  • Adheres to safety and infection control policies. Demonstrates knowledge and skills in waste disposal and standard precautions.

  • Utilizes Personal Protective Equipment as designated by established department policies and procedures.

  • Performs related duties, as required.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within probationary period, required.

  • Successful completion of on-the-job training program, within probationary period, required.

  • Prior experience working in healthcare environment, preferred.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, and follow written and/or oral instructions.

  • Ability to be well organized and work under high pressure, required.
