The New York Public Library Literacy Leaders Program Assistant - Seward Park Library in Manhattan, New York

The Youth Education and Curriculum Development team seeks enthusiastic individuals to provide program assistance to the Program Coordinators running its Literacy Leaders after-school program at one of four (4) library locations:

  • Mosholu Library (Bronx)

  • Harry Belafonte 115th Street (Harlem)

  • Seward Park (Lower East Side)

  • Washington Heights

Literacy Leaders prepares high school interns in the 11th and 12th grades to work with first and second graders to improve their reading skills and foster a love of reading. During the spring semester and summer, the interns are paired with first and second grade students to facilitate literacy activities during the after-school hours. The Literacy Leader Program Assistants will have the opportunity to assist programming staff in implementing best practices for children’s and teen programming and to learn about literacy education in the context of a large urban library system.

This position is temporary and is scheduled from January 2020 through August 2020.

The Literacy Leader Program Assistant will work under the supervision of the Program Coordinator and will provide program support by:

  • Setting up and breaking down daily program activities

  • Monitoring interns and elementary students during the program to ensure that they are in a safe and educational environment

  • Monitoring attendance for interns and elementary students

  • Assisting with problem-solving program logistics and curriculum

  • Developing positive relationships with students that foster their academic and personal growth.

  • Performing other duties as assigned.

  • Enrollment in an accredited college degree program required, Bachelor's Degree preferred

  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills

  • Interest in urban library services

  • Interest in helping children to improve their literacy

  • Demonstrated experience working with K-12 students preferred

  • Ability to speak Spanish preferred

  • Be Curious in all aspects of your work

  • Be Helpful to patrons and colleagues

  • Be Resourceful in solving problems

  • Public library setting

  • Limited physical effort is required

  • May require travel within NYC

14 hours per week: Monday-Thursday from 2:30-6PM
