Posting Summary:

The Office of Access and Services for Individuals with Disabilities (OASID) at Teachers College, Columbia University (TC) is seeking an Assistive Technology Specialist to coordinate accommodations and support services for faculty, staff and students to ensure that individuals with disabilities can fully participate in the Teachers College community.

Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Office of Access and Services for Individuals with Disabilities (OASID) at Teachers College, Columbia University (TC) is committed to providing equal access to all programs, activities, and events to people with disabilities. By coordinating accommodations and support services, OASID works with faculty, staff and students to ensure that individuals with disabilities can fully participate in the Teachers College community.

Reporting to the Director of OASID, the Assistive Technology Specialist is responsible for

providing guidance and services to facilitate the use of assistive technology and access for persons with disabilities at Teachers College.

Job Summary/Function:

• Oversee all technology-related accommodations for students and employees including, but not limited to, managing and maintaining assistive technologies; coordinating the provision of alternative format textbooks and course materials in a timely way; researching, recommending and training on technologies; and maintaining a College-wide database for managing data, accommodations and services such as exam accommodations and note taking among others.

Technical Responsibilities:

o Research, evaluate, recommend and maintain College-wide hardware and software to support accommodations, accessibility and inclusion.

o Develop/maintain expertise on assistive technologies including but not limited to: Kurzweil, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Inspiration, Texthelp Read and Write, JAWS, Zoomtext, Math Type, and Ginger Software.

o Manage software and hardware upgrades and updates.

o Administer assistive technology software and equipment.

o Provide one-on-one technical support to students and employees with disability technology-related accommodations.

o Lead the College in addressing technical issues and advise on ongoing development to ensure products are fully utilized.

o In collaboration with the Assistant Director, manage OASID materials conversion (text to alternative format), note-taking technologies, processes for acquiring and creating captioned videos, transcripts of videos and remote real-time transcription.

Guidance Responsibilities:

o Serve as accessibility subject matter expert for the College in the area of website accessibility and accessibility of applications on various platforms.

o Advise prospective and current students and employees regarding accessibility services, technology and related resources both within and outside of the College.

o Collaborate and consult with faculty and instructional staff on instructional technology to implement reasonable and appropriate accommodations as well as Universal Design.

o Provide guidance around accessible and inclusive approaches to campus community members, increasing awareness of electronic information technology accessibility to address barriers.

o Assist faculty and staff to ensure educational materials and environments are accessible.

Data Responsibilities:

o Manage ongoing College-wide reporting, data collection and analysis related to assistive technology.

o Evaluate data management and use to determine impact, recommending revisions and improvements as needed.

• Training Responsibilities:

o Develop and deliver training on assistive technology for students, faculty and staff.

o Determine and communicate standards and best practices as well as training staff to support these processes.

Budget Responsibilities:

o Manage and project budgets for areas of responsibility.

o Work closely with the Director to make fiscally responsible budget projections based on daily operations and research accommodations to efficiently meet service obligations.

• Develop, revise and maintain accessible content on the OASID website, including information about policies, processes, trainings, events, programming, etc.

• Stay abreast of best practices in disability services, updating pages and adding new resources in a timely and accessible way.

• Serve on College campus committees and working groups related to technology and accessibility. Design and deliver trainings/workshops around assistive technologies.

• Participate in ongoing professional development and training to keep current in disability services field and advise about proactive approaches to service and accommodation delivery.

• Other tasks related to accessible technology and campus-wide inclusivity initiatives as needed/assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in a related discipline required.

• Minimum of four years of related experience including a minimum of 1-year experience focused on Assistive Technology and Alternate format work in a higher education disability services setting.

• Familiarity with a range of assistive technologies and relevant legal requirements technical standards, and best practices.

• Strong knowledge and understanding of assistive technologies for persons with disabilities, including /familiarity with Kurzweil, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Inspiration, Texthelp Read and Write, JAWS, Zoomtext, Math Type, and Ginger Software.

• Familiarity with inclusive and universal design for learning (UDL) pedagogies and experience researching, evaluating, and troubleshooting technology tools are strongly desired.

• Ability to manage and troubleshoot technical issues for assistive technologies, including hardware and software.

• Working knowledge of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, its 2008 amendments, and WCAG 2.0 as well as other appropriate laws pertaining to higher education and disabilities and the ability to ensure compliance for areas managed.

• Proficiency with a wide array of assistive technologies and basic computer programs such Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom as well as G-Suite

• Knowledge of accessibility auditing and testing tools and strategies.

• Strong web accessibility skills, including knowledge of online access issues and means for addressing them.

• Understanding of technology solutions relevant to persons with disabilities and the ability to anticipate students' needs, expectations, and requirements related to technology and with a focus on universal design for learning.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree or certification as an Assistive Technology Specialist.

• Experience preferred in managing assistive technologies, including alternate format conversions, databases and websites for disability services preferably in a higher education setting.

• Experience with managing budgets

• Experience working with Accommodate case management database software
