Advertised Summary Job Description The Associate Dean for Development will lead SIPA's development efforts. She/he works with the Dean, faculty, staff and University leadership to create an innovative, comprehensive and sustainable development program to support Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). Reporting to the Vice President for University Development and to the Dean of SIPA, the Associate Dean will conceptualize, plan, and execute a strategic and coordinated program to identify and create opportunities to advance SIPA through all development levels from major and principal gifts to annual fund to gift planning. S/he will also play a major role in the successful completion of the School's comprehensive campaign set to conclude in 2021. She/he will be responsible for achieving SIPA's campaign goal of $150M and for sustaining and building upon SIPA's annual fundraising target of $20M.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Serves as a senior member of the SIPA leadership team

  • Expands the fundraising effort among alumni, friends, corporations, and foundation both in the New York City area, domestically, and internationally. This includes building new relationships with alumni and friends who care about the mission and substantive academic areas of this leading school of global public policy.

  • Manages a portfolio of 75 top prospects through all phases from research and identification through cultivation, solicitation, closure, and stewardship

  • Meets fundraising goals and metrics by identifying and personally working with top prospects through successful gift closings.

  • Given the School's global nature, works with the Dean to strategize on international development opportunities and travels periodically with the Dean to engage and raise funds from international alumni and friends

  • Raises awareness among alumni and friends to the extraordinary work being done by SIPA students and faculty

  • Ensures that the Dean is actively and effectively deployed in the fundraising arena at the appropriate levels

  • Leads the SIPA fundraising team of six development professionals through mentoring and training; ensures that work is managed in a consistent, timely and discreet manner; ensures all interactions are high quality; accountable for maintaining a strong customer service focus in all activities and directing the team to do the same

  • Builds inter-disciplinary fundraising commitments to programs that expand and extend SIPA's mission and programs among other schools in the University

  • Participate as an active member of the Office of Alumni and Development community including management and prospect coordination activities.

  • As a senior member of the Office of Alumni and Development team, work within Alumni and Development's Core Values and proactively collaborate with colleagues around prospect issues.

Minimum Qualifications for Grade

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant Bachelor's degree required. A minimum of 8 years fundraising or related experience required. At least 3 years of demonstrated leadership / managerial responsibility required. Computer proficiency (Word, Excel) required. This position requires evening and weekend work and travel as necessary.

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant Must possess strong analytical and communication skills and experience with strategic planning processes; prior experience in a not for profit, or similarly complex organizations a plus. Demonstrated ability to work in a high pressure, fast-paced environment. Demonstrated excellence in a variety of competencies including: project management, teamwork, analytical thinking and client/customer awareness. Must possess the ability to develop, supervise staff, work with changing priorities and multiple projects. Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including a high level of attention to detail and active listening skills. Must be able to problem-solve and troubleshoot, in addition to the ability to work independently in a dynamic team environment. Demonstrated ability to effectively partner with a diverse group of administrators and academic leaders. Must be able to negotiate issues, resolve problems and have strong influencing skills. The successful candidate must be a strategic thinker, effective in moving strategic agendas, politically savvy, ensure the utmost discretion in all matters, as well as possess an ability to work well with all levels of management, both internally and externally, be flexible in nature, have a sound judgment with a collaborative style that fosters teamwork and cooperation beyond the immediate team to the broader organization. Must have a passion for excellent customer service and commitment to exceptional quality.

Special Instructions

Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree preferred.

Previous work experience in higher educational institution highly preferred. Experience working in an international context within development or business is highly preferred, and/or experience and knowledge directly related to SIPA's mission and core academic fields.
