New York Times Associate Puzzle Editor in New York, New York

Job Description

The New York Times is seeking an Associate Puzzle Editor to join the Games team, supporting work on the Crossword product and our growing suite of puzzles and games.

As an Associate Puzzle Editor, you’ll work with a small team on our online crossword submission system, helping to select the puzzles that will run in The New York Times. You’ll correspond with puzzle constructors from around the country on their submitted work, providing guidance on themes and fill words. You’ll work with editor Will Shortz, rewriting and fact-checking clues for soon-to-be-published puzzles. You will report to Joel Fagliano, Digital Puzzles Editor at the Times.

Finally, you’ll work as part of the larger New York Times Games team — including game designers, engineers, product managers, data analysts and marketers — to help power an ever-growing subscription business.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Help manage and evaluate the 6,500+ crossword submissions a year we receive to ensure our feedback to constructors is timely and helpful.

  • Highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each puzzle, including:

  • Identifying themes and assessing their quality

  • Pointing out good and bad fill

  • Review these notes with the rest of the editorial team

  • Write constructors on whether their puzzles have been accepted, rejected or need more work, with specific feedback on why; handle back-and-forth on edits and changes

  • Fix fill in accepted or soon-to-be accepted puzzles

  • Coordinate this work with other team members who will also help with correspondence

  • Help to edit clues for accepted puzzles

  • Help manage the production process of moving the fully-edited puzzles from InDesign files into the newspaper, our apps and website.

  • Test-solve the daily Minis, puzzle packs and other digital puzzles for the team.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of puzzle construction experience

  • Clue-writing skills

  • Strong written communication skills

  • Proof-reading abilities

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team

  • Knowledge of the puzzle constructor community and wider puzzle landscape
