Position Summary

The Director for Operations (DO) within the Human Research Protection Office (HRPO) of Columbia University (CU) reports directly to the Executive Director (ED) of the HRPO, and is responsible for IRB reliance negotiations, relationships and processes; essential business and financial functions; and efforts to improve office-wide efficiency. The DO will act as a role model within and outside of the HRPO, in accordance with the CU Administrative Code of Conduct; convey a positive and respectful attitude; employ high standards while performing duties; demonstrate excellent communication, time management and prioritization skills; and maintain a pattern of regular and comprehensive reporting to the ED.

Responsibilities

Core responsibilities:

  • Design, implement and monitor systems to manage routine business and financial office procedures in an operationally and fiscally responsible manner, and monitor compliance to the processes;

  • Manage IRB reliance relationships between Columbia and other institutions, and HRPO reliance processes including document management;

  • Develop and implement an overall plan to continuously evaluate procedural efficiency and lean operational improvements;

  • Manage special projects, including upgrades to the electronic module for submission, review and monitoring of human research protocols;

  • Supervise and develop officers whose responsibilities relate to office-wide initiatives, including allocation of such officers’ time and effort to such initiatives;

  • Represent the HRPO on institutional committees and workgroups for which the focus is directly related to the DO primary responsibilities.

Duties common to all HRPO Directors:

  • Serve on committees constituted to improve the functioning of the IRB office.

  • Maintain awareness of institutional entities, policies, and relationships that affect IRB functioning.

  • Develop positive relationships with researchers and colleagues throughout CU to facilitate greater efficiency of HRPO processes.

  • Work with other HRPO officers of administration and staff to ensure uniformity of review and compliance with IRB standard operating procedures and applicable federal and state regulations.

  • Maintain up to date knowledge of state and federal regulations as well as policies, guidelines and ethical codes related to the protection of human subjects in research.

  • Other work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, and five years of related experience, of which at least 3 should be research- or IRB-related.

  • Experience with management of financial, business, and personnel matters in a programmatic manner to facilitate compliance and efficiency.

  • Poised, mature and professional to work with a variety of personalities within the HRPO and the University, at other research institutions and at federal regulatory agencies.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with partners in research, i.e., investigators and coordinators.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong proofreading skills.

  • Detail oriented, with superior organizational skills and able to simultaneously manage and prioritize a variety of projects.

  • Resourceful, proactive, and thorough, having a focused, self-starting attitude with the ability to work independently and as a member of the team.

  • Solid computer skills and strong competency in Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences human research is preferred. Knowledge of international ethical codes and regulations governing human subjects preferred. Certification as an IRB professional is also preferred.

  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations and industry requirements and practices regarding the proper conduct of human research.
