Over the past few years we have been growing our Audio team to better support successful efforts like The Daily at https://www.nytco.com/press/the-daily-hits-one-billion-downloads/ (1 billion downloads since 2017), Caliphate at https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/podcasts/caliphate-isis-rukmini-callimachi.html , 1619 at https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/23/podcasts/the-daily/1619-project.html and Still Processing at https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/16/reader-center/still-processing-podcast-wesley-morris-jenna-wortham.html , and adding to those efforts through acquisitions like Audm at https://www.nytco.com/press/the-new-york-times-company-acquires-audm/ (a subscription-based audio app that offers listeners the world’s best longform journalism, read aloud word-for-word by celebrated audiobook narrators) and Serial Productions at https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200722005975/en/New-York-Times-Company-Acquires-Serial-Productions . While people increasingly find themselves with less and less time, the natural human need to be informed, enriched and entertained remains strong, and we believe there’s a great opportunity with audio to help build products that better meet people where they are.
We are looking for founding members of the Audio tech team to build out a world class audio product. iOS Engineer will work closely with backend developers, product and design team members, as well as the NYT Audio editorial team, to help shape our product offering. This is a greenfield project so all team members will have a hand in shaping app architecture, best practices and team culture.

Technical competency: You have deep knowledge of iOS frameworks and Swift, and keep up to date on changes in the frameworks, language and overall developer community.
Code cleanliness: You have an understanding of what makes code well structured, maintainable and flexible and strive to create a culture where quality code is valued.
User focus: You care deeply about how design, engineering and product decisions contribute to creating a seamless, engaging and enjoyable user experience.
You will create and maintain features using Swift.
You will contribute to app architectural decisions technical roadmap and timeline estimations.
You will participate in technical discussions with backend developers and other owners of internal/external dependencies.
You will help promote standards in Swift development and delivery, and engage with the community of iOS developers at the Times.
Where applicable, you will integrate with broader New York Times iOS platform code, which may be at least partially written or have dependencies written in Objective-C.
You have an understanding of iOS design patterns, memory management and multi-threading.
You have experience working with audio or video (not required but a big bonus!).
You have hands-on iOS Swift experience, including writing unit tests, networking, data persistence and UI.
You have a good product sense and the vision to translate product goals into quality shippable code.
