The Department of Neurology at Columbia University is seeking a Nurse Practitioner for the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig ALS Center. The successful candidate will oversee all clinical services of the ALS Center, including management of the activities of the multi-disciplinary team of allied professionals involved in ALS patient care.
As an essential member of the ALS Center team, the Nurse Practitioner will:
-function as a clinical member of the ALS care team, working alongside ALS physicians and independently to provide medical management for new and follow-up patients with ALS and related motor neuron diseases.
-perform history and physicals, including general neurological examinations, order necessary laboratory and ancillary test, provide symptomatic treatment.
-serve as the Director of Clinical Services to oversee the daily operations of the ALS Center clinics.
-provide ongoing support to ALS patients and their families, including interactions in clinic, over the phone and through email
-meet with patients and families to discuss advanced directives, hospice care and other end of life issues.
-make preparations for weekly multidisciplinary clinic, including patient synopses.
-provide post-clinic follow-up to ensure directives of the clinic are fulfilled and that needs of patients are met.
-assist with patient billing and documentation of services.
-support the completion of the electronic medical records and ensure accuracy of records.
-ensure clinical records meet requirements of meaningful use.
-guide support staff to fulfill necessary clinic functions.
-order necessary services and medical equipment for patients, as determined by the ALS clinical team.
-provide supporting documentation to vendors and insurance companies including letters of medical necessity to obtain authorizations for equipment, medications and services.
-working with vendors, confirm equipment and services are delivered and functioning satisfactorily.
-provide telephone triage and document conversations in the medical record appropriately.
-help to maintain multidisciplinary care clinic schedules, coordinate appointments with other providers and arrange necessary testing.
-facilitate admissions to the hospital when necessary.
-participate in ongoing quality improvement projects as directed.
The Nurse Practitioner will also
-play a role in the Center's highly active ALS research program by consenting patients and coordinating clinical patient care activity that is research related.
Minimum Qualifications for Grade
Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant Requires Master's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of experience, plus a current New York State NP and RN license.

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant An ideal candidate for this position should be an enthusiastic self-starter with strong problem solving, organizational, computer and time management skills.
The applicant should have a desire to work as part of a team with a challenging patient population in need of compassion and support.
Preferred Qualifications Prior experience with ALS patients or in a palliative care setting is preferable, but not required.
