New York Times Software Engineer, Parenting in New York, New York
The New York Times is seeking a Software Engineer for its Parenting team—a team that is building new resources for parents to help them make sense of an increasingly complicated landscape of advice and information, feel more confident in themselves and how they parent, and understand what matters about current research in the field of child development.
The Parenting team is still in its infancy (no pun intended), and we’re looking for a fantastic engineer and collaborator to help build a wonderful product and remote-friendly team from the ground up. This project is fast-paced, so you will have the opportunity to take bold strokes and quickly see the results in action for parents and their families.
Are a product-minded engineer, with a keen interest in the Parenting team’s vision and the skills to shape and realize it
Have substantive experience in the stewardship and design of production systems
Have a track record of running and debugging those systems at scale
Can clearly articulate and express a technical point of view
Feel confident and fluent working with Go or Node—and understand the limitations of the language and the boundaries of your experience
Work with cloud services platforms, preferably GCP
Work with stakeholders and fellow engineers to conceive of a project's technical vision
Have a strong history of constructing pragmatic, iterative paths towards a long goal
Value clear communication skills that center the perspective of the listener
Identify as an empathetic collaborator, with a history of guiding fellow engineers and non-engineering stakeholders towards good outcomes—both for the project and the humans who are responsible for it
As a member of our team, your work will include:
Collaborating with a small, cross-functional team made up of peers from design, product, engineering, and the newsroom to build our new product
Managing the production environment of the application itself and ensuring its reliability
Building APIs for web and native applications
Engineering appropriately for resilience and scale at every stage
Designing and managing search indices for parenting content
Integrating with other systems, and the teams that manage them, at the New York Times
Writing comprehensive and useful tests
Reviewing code and responding to code review
