New York Times Supervising Editor, Beds and Linens/Living and Decorating (Remote) in New York, New York

Job Description

About the Position

Wirecutter is searching for a supervising editor to manage our product coverage in the areas listed below, as well as serving as the people manager for the staff writers assigned to their department.

  • Beds and linens: includes bedframes, mattress toppers, sheets, comforters, duvet covers, pillows, blankets, and bath towels.

  • Living and decorating: includes furniture (indoors and out), organizational items (shelving, storage bins, wall hooks, and the like), and other items and services related to home decorating (from online framing companies to college-dorm essentials).

The supervising editor will work with the department’s senior editor, to whom they will report, in planning the department’s coverage; proposing new ideas for guides, blog posts, and videos; and editing guides and blog posts.

In a cover letter with your application, please tell us an example of a purchase you’ve made recently that turned out to be a mistake—what you bought, why it failed, and how you figured out what to get instead (or next time!). Spreadsheets not at all required...but if you did happen to make one, we’d love to see it!

Responsibilities

  • Work with senior editor to set strategy for your beat.

  • Assign projects to freelance and staff writers.

  • Discern what’s essential and what’s unnecessary in your categories, and show passion for the topic balanced by skepticism of marketing claims and unproven ideas.

  • Juggle multiple guides, blog posts, and other content with different writers; manage deadlines; plan and oversee product research and testing; review writers’ supporting documents and notes; edit and revise copy; and work closely with experienced Wirecutter editors to ensure the stories are up to the editorial standards we’ve established in our hundreds of guides

  • Contribute original ideas to test planning, suggest creative reporting strategies, challenge writers’ assumptions

  • Use data to support potential story ideas and track their performance

  • Write short form and occasional long-form content as required

  • Be a frank and forthcoming communicator; collaborate with writers rather than overwriting their work

  • Serve as the people manager for the staff writers assigned to your sections, approving timecards and expense reports, and doing midyear and annual reviews

  • Take a caring, thoughtful approach to supporting staff writers’ career growth and development

Qualifications

  • Five-plus years of experience working at a media company with at least two years of experience editing writers.

  • Experience with SEO (from an editorial perspective, not technical aspects of optimization) and a sense of how to use web analytics data to make editorial decisions.

  • Strong beat knowledge of your sections.

  • Fluency with Google Docs

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience writing or editing reviews of products or services a plus

  • Experience with creating test plans for evaluating products

  • Experience collaborating with an art director and/or photo director to present content visually

  • Experience expressing complex ideas using visualizations such as charts, graphs, or infographics
