Responsibilities

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The social worker provides comprehensive mental health and/or dual diagnosis services for individuals who have a diagnosable mental illness. He/she functions as a primary therapist providing psychosocial assessment and social work treatment for patients and their families. He/she also provides crisis and risk management interventions, collaborates with collateral contacts, and coordinates linkages to necessary community resources. The social worker serves as a discipline representative on a clinic multidisciplinary diagnostic team and assumes responsibility for patient evaluation, as delegated by the Intake Committee.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative:

  • Ensures that Social Work Division, Department, Program, and Hospital policies and procedures are implemented with regard to professional practice, patient care and discharge planning.

  • Participates in routine committee process of the Social Work Division and the Child and Adolescent Clinic, and complies with Social Work Division and Departmental quality assurance and staff development requirements.

  • Attends monthly Social Work Division and Program staff meetings.

  • Participates in activities of the Social Work Division including, but not limited to timely completion of statistical reports/forms, time sheets and other Hospital or Division forms; Hospital and Division mandatory in-service training programs and UHS reviews.

  • Subscribes to the departmental goal of creating a culturally competent environment by treating patient, families, trainees, and co-workers in a sensitive manner with appropriate attention to cultural differences.

  • Participates in available cultural competence events and training appropriate to job duties.

Clinical:

  • Responsible for providing 23 direct service hours per week in the Pediatric Behavioral Health & Wellness Outpatient Service.

  • Has time allocated for mental health and dual diagnosis cases, as deemed appropriate to meet the needs of the patient population of Pediatric Behavioral Health & Wellness as determined by the clinical leadership. Supervision of dual diagnosis cases will be provided by Strong Recovery.

  • Performs psychosocial and substance use disorder assessments of patients and their families. Provides social work treatment and education to patients and families in response to psychosocial problems which may impede the patient's recovery. These modalities include parent counseling, play therapy, individual, family or group therapy.

  • Coordinates activities related to the comprehensive treatment and discharge planning for the patients assigned to his/her caseload.

  • Collaborates with appropriate collateral contacts and provides linkages to community resources.

  • Participates as a member of multidisciplinary diagnostic and treatment team. Requests and coordinates psychiatric consultation when indicated.

  • Provides consultation on child abuse and neglect assessment and coordinates

  • reporting for other clinic disciplines.

  • Provides back-up social work services as requested during the absence of co¬≠ workers.

  • Documents social work interventions in the patient's chart in compliance with Division, Departmental, and Hospital Policy.

    Teaching (TBD):

  • Based on experience, and as determined by the social work supervisor, the social worker may supervise social work graduate students. Supervision relates to psychosocial assessment and intervention with patients and their families, and to the practice of group therapy. Upon invitation from the Program Director, and in consultation with the Social Work supervisor, he/she may offer learning experiences for trainees from other disciplines.

Research (TBD):

  • The social worker may participate in social work and/or interdisciplinary research endeavors, in consultation with the social work supervisor, and Program Director.

PROFESSIONAL SUPERVISION, ACCOUNTABILITY, AND EVALUATION: Supervision/Consultation:

  • The social worker's professional performance is supervised by a Social Work Division supervisor who is Licensed by the State of New York (LCSW).

Accountability:

  • The social worker is accountable administratively and clinically to the social work supervisor, as well as to the clinical supervisor from Strong Recovery for dual diagnosis cases and substance use disorder evaluations (and through him/her to the Social Work Division Clinical Manager in Psychiatry) for provision of social work services, and adherence to Social Work policies, procedures, and standards of professional conduct. The social worker's job performance must conform to the expectations set forth in the position description.

  • The social worker is accountable to the Clinical Director of the Service for providing professional social work services in accordance with the policies and standards established by the Service and the Department of Psychiatry.

Evaluation:

  • Social work evaluations are conducted annually by the social worker's supervisor, with commentary from the Clinical Director of the Service. Salary and promotional recommendations are made by the social worker's supervisor in consultation with appropriate Social Work Division personnel. Salary increases and promotional recommendations are subject to guidelines established by the Social Work Division, Strong Memorial Hospital and the University of Rochester.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

The social worker who occupies this position must have a MSW from an accredited social work graduate program and must obtain a New York State social work license within eighteen months of employment.

POSITION DESCRIPTION MAINTENANCE:

This position description is reviewed annually by the social worker and his/her supervisor. Position review provides opportunity for comment from the Clinical Director of the Service, and for updating, as needed. Similarly, if a new social worker is hired for the position, a review and update of the position description should occur. Changes in the position description are recommended by the supervisor, in consultation with the Clinical Director of the Service. Any position modification is authorized by the Social Work Division Clinical Manager for Psychiatry.
