Position Summary:

This position is for technical support in the Genomics Research Center (GRC), a university core service laboratory. Work independently using techniques in molecular biology, including isolation of DNA and RNA from human samples, DNA and RNA analysis, PCR, high-throughput sample processing and DNA sequencing.

Typical Duties:

Laboratory activities - High Throughput Sequencing:

  • Use of specialized instrumentation for DNA Sequencing.
  • Sample preparation and quality assessment.
  • Recording and analysis of the acquired data.
  • Teaches laboratory techniques and procedures to students and laboratory technical support staff; and counsels them on technical problems.
  • Strict adherence to written SOPs with daily record keeping is required.

Laboratory activities – Real-time PCR

  • Use of specialized instrumentation for Real-time PCR.
  • Sample preparation and quality assessment.
  • Preparation of reagents for sample processing.
  • Recording and analysis of the acquired data.

Laboratory activities – Miscellaneous sample processing including but not limited to Genotyping, Nucleic Acid Isolation and Quality Control:

  • Nucleic acid extraction, purification, and amplification.
  • Nucleic acid quality analysis using the Bioanalyzer and Nanodrop.

Laboratory activities – Advanced data analysis and methods development:

  • Under supervision of the GRC Associate Director, the technical associate will be responsible for taking unprocessed data from instruments and using specialized software to generate spreadsheets and reports for lab customers.

Laboratory activities:

  • Assists to maintain lab supply inventories, performs laboratory instrument maintenance, keeps records for hazardous waste and chemicals, and follows general laboratory health and safety regulations. Participates in lab meetings and GRC-sponsored seminars.

Customer service activities:

  • Answers questions from core customers regarding offered services, pricing, and order status.Authorizes the release of sample reports to core customers after ensuring that quality standards have been met.


  • Bachelor's degree with major course work in field of assignment, and 1 year of related work experience involving direct assistance to researchers; or any equivalent combination of experience, training and education; 4 or more years’ experience in biomedical science and genomics preferred.
  • A strong background in molecular biology and genomics is required.
  • Experience with Windows and MacIntosh-based programs for spreadsheets, word processing and graphics.
  • Experience with Linux/Unix based computer systems and DNA sequencing is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing is essential.
  • An ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to use good judgement.
  • Training in the safe handling of chemicals and infectious agents is required and will be provided.
  • Strict attention to detail, organizational skills, high quality customer service skills, and willingness to learn new techniques is necessary.
