Job SummaryResponsible for overall manufacturing operations of the facility. Achievement of safety, quality, and profitability results based on company objectives. Demonstrates positive development and succession of managers, supervisors, leads, and associates. Has quality, safety, cost and customer service accountability for all products produced in the facility. Work closely with VWR marketing and sales teams on product and capability development and selling support. In addition, oversees all activities relating to Chemical Manufacturing from personnel to production ensuring production to schedule, manages departmental performance/productivity/budgets, maintains compliance to procedures/regulatory requirements and responsible for employee safety. Plans for future business continuity.


  • Supports and enforces quality system and regulatory policies, work instructions, and applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Ensures all established safety, cost, quality, and delivery commitments are met.

  • Drives the development, initiation, and/or improvement of products, processes, equipment, or technology.

  • Provides hands on, day-to-day leadership of functions at the site.

  • Provides input to the strategic business plans, including the operating budget. Ensures that these plans and budgets are communicated to the appropriate functions and that the managers and supervisors understand and accept their responsibilities under these plans and budgets.

  • Establishes production and quality standards, and develops budget and cost controls Executes and monitors operating and fixed expenses. Identifies and implements ways to reduce costs while maintaining required quality, safety and regulatory compliance.

  • Develops manufacturing plan and establishes procedures for maintaining high standards of manufacturing operations to ensure that products conform to established regulatory, ISO standards, customer and company quality standards.

  • Formulates and recommends manufacturing policies and programs that guide the organization in maintaining and improving its competitive position and the profitability of the operation.

  • Maintains discipline, morale, harmonious personnel relations; consults and advises leadership regarding employee problems, policy interpretation, and necessary disciplinary actions; approves employee “change of status”; handles employee complaints in accordance with company policy; makes effective recommendations for promotions, transfers, and terminations.

  • Determines responsibilities of assigned organization and staff positions to accomplish business objectives. Trains and ensures all assigned employees are aware of and comply with company, government, and customer policies, procedures, and regulations.

  • Collaborates with local support functions such as EHS&S, QA, QC, IT, HR in collaboration with Global Leadership. Keep current on industry technology / regulatory changes in order to increase product innovation.

  • Strategically plans and aligns manufacturing to meet capacity requirements including resources, budgets and Capex requirements.

  • Works closely with sales, commercial team and account managers to understand current and future business states to proactively manage production demands.

  • Leads key initiatives to drive continuous improvements to further develop and evolve site capabilities and offerings.

  • Active member on the Management Review Board to assess business performance, identify trends and lead improvement teams to address negative business trends. The board also utilizes a team approach to assess non-conformances/out of specifications/complaints to disposition materials/products and develop/implement CAPA action plans.

  • Accountable for departmental productivity levels and management and reporting of key performance indicators (KPIs).

  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate departmental activities to fulfill sales orders, meet inventory requirements, and deliver manufactured products in accordance with established procedures and approved processes.

  • Ensures proper manufacturing processes are followed in accordance to written documentation (i.e., Batch Records, cGMPs, SOP’s, Work Instructions).

  • Ensures proper safety measures are followed during all activities.

  • Monitors work for accuracy, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures.

  • Trains, motivates, monitors and evaluates performance of employees.

  • Maintains and revises procedures associated with production processes to ensure accuracy, consistency and product quality.

  • Actively participates with internal and/or customer audits.

  • Addresses departmental non-conformities employing root cause analysis and implements corrective and preventative actions.

  • Participates with activities directly related to ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certification, and on-going conformance.

  • Works closely with internal departments to assure commitment to customer is met in a timely manner.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education/Training, Experience and Certifications)

  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field, preferably chemistry and/or engineering discipline

  • Minimum 8 years of progressive manufacturing experience and responsibilities, 3 of which must be in a supervisory capacity; or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Chemical engineering or chemical production experience required

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Those necessary to perform the job competently)

  • Demonstrated ability to lead people and get exceptional results through others

  • Demonstrated ability to organize

  • Familiarity with Chemical production processes and applications within similar industry preferred

  • Highly organized and manage multiple projects

  • Comfortable at all levels of an organization, from shop floor to Board/Executive Management

  • Ability to self-motivated individual who can work within a global network and corporate structure. Manage “up” as well as within a matrix structure with many cross functional stakeholders

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, recommend and deploy manufacturing systems

  • Must be adept at problem analysis and problem resolution at both a strategic and functional level. Most comfortable working independently with data driven decision making, and an ability to exploit technology to identify data trends and facilitate business management little supervision

  • Excellent interpersonal and Must have strong leadership skills, with excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Experience working with manufacturing based technology, processes and principles

  • Demonstrate results oriented, cross functional collaborative leadership

  • Experienced in coaching, mentoring and developing others

  • High Integrity; clear communicator

  • Comfortable with ambiguity, but driven to make order out of chaos

  • Entrepreneurial spirit

  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks and priorities and easily adapt to changing situations

  • Computer literacy applied to scheduling, procedure revisions and data management is required

  • Ability to take initiative, meet deadlines, and lead people in a team environment is essential


Typically works in an office environment with adequate lighting and ventilation and a normal range of temperature and noise level.

Work assignments are diversified. Examples of past precedent are used to resolve work problems. New alternatives may be developed to resolve problems.

A frequent volume of work and deadlines impose strain on routine basis. Must be able to travel internationally to VWR manufacturing and customer sites.

Minimal physical effort is required. Work is mostly sedentary but does require walking, standing, bending, reaching, lifting or carrying objects that typically weigh less than 10 lbs.
