This position is located at the United States Mint, Manufacturing Department, Quality Assurance & Assay Division, West Point, NY.
The West Point facility produces coins in a variety of processes used in the making of circulated, un-circulated, commemorative and proof precious metal (gold, silver, platinum) coins and medals (domestic and foreign).

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
- Overseeing particular projects or experiments, and developing methods and procedures to facilitate the analysis of alloys and metals used for coinage manufacture; the analysis and testing of a variety of substances used in the manufacture of coins by using established method and practices.
- Performs the full range of qualitative and quantitative chemical and physical analyses on a variety of metals, metal products and alloys, which include fire assay, volumetric and calorimetric analysis utilizing a variety of analytical instruments and equipment as needed.
- Interprets and evaluates analytical results to determine their validity and accuracy; and researches and devises new approaches to problems when standard techniques are not applicable.
- Reviews the formulas of background material, all relevant Federal laws and regulations, manuals and scientific literature to determine the general approach necessary to develop the requested information.
- Develops, tests, alters and adapts methods and procedures to improve or extend their application to new or unusual materials or situations.
Occasional travel - Occasional overnight travel may be required 2 to 3 times a year.

For the GS-11: You must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-09 level or equivalent that is directly related to the position. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Performing a variety of chemical analysis such as utilizing modern chromatographic, spectroscopic, spectrometric or hyphenated analytical techniques, AND
Developing conclusions, and recommending actions, AND
Developing quantitative analytical methods and carried out qualitative and quantitative analysis for metals, metal alloys and/or chemical products.
Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
For the GS-09: You must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-07 level or equivalent that is directly related to the position. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Performing standardized chemical tests and analyses on a broad range of samples in a laboratory setting, AND
Implementing new testing and analytical methods using either automated analytical systems or manual laboratory analytical procedures.
Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree,
For the GS-07: You must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-05 level or equivalent that is directly related to the position. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Assisting chemists by performing laboratory work using principles of Analytical Chemistry methods, techniques, and precedents; AND
Using a computerized database to enter, retrieve, and manipulate data.
Education: 1 year of graduate-level education; or superior academic achievement. *OR*For all grades: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-11, you must have been at the GS-09 level for 52 weeks.
For the GS-09, you must have been at the GS-07 level for 52 weeks.
For the GS-07, you must have been at the GS-05 level for 52 weeks.
Basic Education Requirements for the Chemist:
- Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR
- Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
